What is LATISSE ™?
LATISSE ™ (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is a new FDA approved prescription treatment for hypotrichosis. It is used to grow eyelashes, making them stronger, thicker and darker. Hypotrichosis is the name for the condition described as having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.
How does LATISSE ™ work?
Eyecare Associates of Lee’s Summit is excited to offer LATISSE™ an innovative new product engineered to help boost eyelash growth and thickness. The product is delivered in a dropper bottle. The medication is dropped onto an applicator, which is then applied to the base of the lashes. Patients should see results within two months, with results lasting for about one to two months. For best results patients are recommended to use LATISSE™ daily. If you forget a dose of LATISSE™, it is not recommended that you try to “catch up.” Just apply LATISSE™ the next evening. Results should not be affected by one missed dose. Using LATISSE™ MORE than once a day will not further enhance eyelash growth. LATISSE™ should be applied to the base of the upper eyelashes only, not the lower lashes. A clinical trial of LATISSE™ was conducted on patients who applied the product to the base of their upper lashes only. Applied nightly, the transfer of LATISSE™ solution from the upper to lower eyelid may occur naturally because the eyelids are closed and the eyelashes touch each other. Over application may increase the chance of experiencing side effects. To ensure safety and maximize effectiveness, please follow the directions provided.
How is LATISSE ™ different from some of the best mascaras and eyelash enhancers on the market?
LATISSE™ is a pharmacological preparation designed to enhance eyelash growth during the growth phase of the eyelash hair cycle. The drug is believed to act to increase the length of this phase and also to increase the number of hairs in the growth phase. The exact mechanism of action is unknown. LATISSE™ is available by prescription only and works as a permanent lash enhancer until the hair falls out. Continued use of LATISSE™ ensures continued visibility of results. If you wish to stop using LATISSE™, the hair will follow its natural cycle and enhanced hairs will be replaced with natural hairs as the lashes grow and fall out, typical over several weeks to months.
LATISSE™ is a product that is used daily in the safety of your own home. Application is typically recommended in the evening to a clean, dry face. There is no need for a medical professional to apply the medication. LATISSE™ may be used in conjunction with other lash enhancers such as mascaras, eyelash curlers and conditioners. LATISSE™ does not work in place of mascara. However, mascara is a nice complement to LATISSE™ to help make your new longer eyelashes look even more attractive.
LATISSE™ is the only clinically proven, FDA approved lash enhancing product currently on the market. The results and effectiveness were shown in a clinical trial.
How safe is LATISSE ™?
The safety of LATISSE™ was shown in a clinical trial.
You should speak with your doctor at Eyecare Associates of Lee’s Summit before using LATISSE™ if:
- You are allergic to one of the ingredients.
- You have been previously diagnosed with eye pressure problems. If you have been previously diagnosed with glaucoma or other eye pressure problem, please speak with your eye doctor prior to starting LATISSE™.

What are possible side effects of LATISSE™?
The most common side effects after using LATISSE ™ are eye itching or redness, which were reported in about 4% of users in the clinical trial. Other less common side effects may include skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness, or redness of the lids on the eyelid skin close to where the product is applied.
If you develop a new eye condition such as an eye infection or eye trauma, experience a sudden loss of vision, have eye surgery or develop any eye reactions, particularly eyelid or infectious reactions, you should immediately talk to your eye care specialist at Eyecare Associates of Lee’s Summit about these reactions and discuss whether or not to continue using LATISSE ™.
You should always only use the FDA-approved sterile applicators to apply LATISSE ™ solution directly to the base of your upper eyelashes. The applicators have been specially designed and manufactured to meet FDA standards, and ensure that the correct dose of LATISSE ™ is applied. This will maximize effectiveness and safety.
Is it safe to wear contact lenses while using LATISSE ™?
Doctors and researchers recommend that you remove your contact lenses prior to applying LATISSE™. It is also recommended that you wait about fifteen minutes after application before re-inserting your lenses.
Where can I buy LATISSE™?
LATISSE™ is available from many dermatologists and eyecare professionals by prescription only. Some practitioners sell the product in house and some will refer you to a local pharmacy to fill your prescription.
