However, about 30% have moderate and 10% have severe dry eye. These patients will normally require more aggressive treatment. We are currently one of only two offices in the area that carries the Boston Sight Scleral Lens.
How Scleral Lenses Treat Dry Eye Disease
Scleral Lenses are a technology that creates a Prosthetic Replacement for the Ocular Surface Ecosystem or PROSE. This technology was first developed by the Boston Sight Foundation. It creates an oxygenated soothing tear layer to protect the damaged cornea.
The scleral lens performs 3 critical tasks for the patient with dry eye:
- Fits under the lids and rests on the white sclera of the eye. By vaulting over the cornea it protects it from the irritation caused by blinking and outside environment.
- The vaulting of the lens traps a soothing bath of artificial tears that constantly refreshes the ocular surface.
- Creates an almost perfectly smooth ocular surface that provides clear and sharp vision without glare.
