Children's Eye Exam

A message from Dr. Lauren Pachy, Optometrist at Eyecare Associates of Lee’s Summit, on children’s eye exams.

Why Children’s eye exams matter

Did you know that 1 in 4 children have an undiagnosed vision problem that can affect learning, behavior, or development? Many eye conditions don’t cause obvious symptoms — which is why routine eye exams by an optometrist are essential as children grow.

When should kids get eye exams?

  • 6-12 months: First comprehensive eye exam (9 months old is the best!)
  • 3 & 5 years old: Before preschool
  • Before starting school & every year after: Even if no problems are noticed

Why early detection matters

Good visions supports:

  • Reading and learning
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Confidence in play and sports
  • Social and emotional development

Regular exams detect issues like nearsightedness (myopia), eye alignment problems, or focusing difficulties early — when they’re easiest to treat.

Children often don’t say “I can’t see well” —they just adapt!

Healthy Vision Habits at Home: Simple ways to support your child’s developing eyes

1. Encourage outdoor play.
At least 2 hours outdoors daily can help reduce the risk of myopia (nearsightedness). Natural light & distance viewing helps to relax our eyes. Sunglasses with UV protection are encouraged!

2. Follow the “20-20-20 rule.”
Every 20 minutes of near work or screen time, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

3. Create a balanced visual environment.

  • Provide good lighting for reading and play.
  • Keep books and screens at least an arm’s length away.
  • Turn down screen brightness to the lowest tolerable level.
  • Encourage a mix of indoor and outdoor activities.

4. Watch for early signs your child might need an exam:

Squinting, rubbing eyes often, avoiding close work, frequent headaches, difficulty recognizing letters, reading below expected age level, sitting close to the TV after being asked to move back.

Comprehensive eye exams are quick, comfortable, and can make a lifelong difference.
