I am positively thrilled!!!!" ![]() Keratoconus and Other Ectasia'sHow Scleral Lenses Treatment Can Help KeratoconusCorneal ectasia is a broad term for a family of conditions that cause a progressive thinning and distortion of the corneal shape. We see through the cornea, which is the clear, central part of the front surface of the eye. Normally, the cornea has a round shape, like a ball. Sometimes, however, the structure of the cornea is just not strong enough to hold this round shape. The normal pressure inside the eye makes the cornea bulge outward like a cone. This condition is called keratoconus. Keratoconus is most common ectasia and affects one in every 2000 people in the United States. Ectasia’s may also occur after refractive surgery (LASIK or PRK) or corneal transplants. ![]() The scleral lens is uniquely designed to correct the irregular surfaces created by these cornea problems.
