The Boston Foundation for Sight conducted a survey of 511 patients with dry eye and found these symptoms:

1. 84% had moderate/severe pain
2. 81% had trouble reading normal print
3. 77% had moderate or severe light sensitivity
4. 74% had problems driving at night

Causes of Dry Eye

A number of conditions can cause dry eye and include:

1. Stevens Johnson Syndrome
2. Chronic Graft vs. Host Disease (GVHD)
3. Sjogen’s Syndrome
4. Eye surgery, such as LASIK, PRK, RK or corneal transplants
5. Herpes Zoster (shingles)
6. Herpes Simplex (ocular herpes)
7. Dry Eye Syndrome
8. Arthritis, menopause and many medicines including birth control

Common Treatments

There are numerous treatments for dry eye. One study showed the following results with some of the most common:

1. 4% had good success with oral antibiotics, fish or flaxseed oil
2. 4% with punctal plugs
3. 5% with immunosuppressant medications (Cyclosporine/ Restasis)
4. 8% with topical steroids
5. 13% with artificial tears, lubricant gel, or lubricant ointment
